5 Years On, or: The good news? There is no news.

I received an email today, from someone who'd been reading this blog. He was contemplating having a vasectomy and realised the short-to-medium-term pain issues, but was worried about the possibility of long-term, chronic pain, following the procedure. He suggested that, since it is now exactly 5 years since my last post here, an update might be useful, to indicate whether I'd experienced any long-term pain.

Well, I've given the game away in the heading, haven't I? I really can't put a date to the last time I had any discomfort attributable to the op. I *think* I had a mild twinge, that lasted an hour or so, about three years ago but, heck, frankly I think I used to get that once in a blue moon anyway, long before my vasectomy. Badly-adjusted underwear, crossing your legs too quickly... any number of things can potentially cause some temporary groinal discomfort, for vasectomised and non-vasectomised men alike.

So I can honestly say I've encountered no long-term pain issues arising from my vasectomy. I'm the proverbial satisfied customer. I'm aware that some men do experience long-term problems, but as far as I've ever been able to ascertain, such cases are quite rare. Of course, I'm a sample of one - not the most statistically reliable sample size! But from my limited perspective, everything's worked out fine.

And I think this one really will be my last entry in this blog. Good luck and best wishes to any future readers!

Hi Paul,

I had a patient mention your Vasectomy Diary the other day. He said that it helped him make up his mind to go through with one. So FYI - even after over 6 years - your old Snippets article is still helping guys out. Well done.

Thank you - this comment really made my day. As I said when setting out to write the blog, I was motivated by my own "fear of the unknown", which I'd experienced when contemplating a vasectomy. I hoped that recounting my experiences and feelings, in real time, might help to provide a personal case history, from the patient's perspective. If it's helped a few people, now and then, I'm delighted.

Jaime

I just had my vasectomy a week ago and the pain did not begin until day 4. My scrotum is also the size of an avocado. I found this blog online and it is my bible as well. What remedies can I use to help the process go smoother and with less pain. I am hoping to hear from both of you very soon.

Hi Jaime,

Sorry, but I'm not really in a position to offer advice, even generally, and certainly not in specific cases. All I was doing in this blog was giving an account of my experiences, as completely as possible. Anything I didn't mention at the time, I can't add anything further. I've no medical qualifications, I was only a patient. If you've any concerns you should consult the medical prctitioner in charge of your case. Good luck, and I hope the pain and swelling disappear soon!

Very best wishes,
Paul

I have been "arguing" with women about this for decades. The general feeling seems to be the woman gave birth and generally took care of birth control issues for years, now it's the mans turn to return the favor with a vasectomy. Vasectomy has no effect on a man's sex drive and performance, and normal sexual activity can be started when you feel comfortable after the vasectomy, although it is important to use some form of contraception until the sperm count is zero because you will not be immediately sterile.

I think there are more satisfied vasectomy customers than hysterectomy customers. Knowing what to expect helps.

I had the traditional bilateral vasectomy done. Experienced a little discomfort with the numbing shot and felt the tugging or pulling of the vas deferens even though numbed up.
All in all, it was no big deal and I have had no complications.
